The dictionary defines a “renaissance man” as one with many talents or areas of knowledge. Robert Wafula, the leader of WE International’s Uganda team, certainly fits this definition; he is a man of many talents and great wisdom.

I have known Robert for more than a dozen years, and I am privileged to call him a friend. Robert is a humble man who would be embarrassed that I am writing about him. Just recently, I learned of another of Robert’s talents, and therefore, I am going to cast aside his embarrassment and brag about Robert.
Robert’s Background
By way of background, Robert grew up in poverty on Lingira Island. By the age of 10, Robert was forced to fish in Lake Victoria at night to support his family. With what little money he had left over from fishing, Robert paid others on the island to teach him and his sister Annet English and other basic skills. Eventually, Christian missionaries working on the Island and others in the church helped Robert attend school on the mainland, where he eventually obtained a bachelor’s degree in business. Just as he was supported as a child, Robert has dedicated his life to serving his fellow Ugandans.
Over the years, Robert has pastored a church and acted as a mentor to many young men and women. He has worked with organizations to better the lives of Ugandans, including Shepherd’s Heart International Ministry, Marathon Missions, and Islands of Hope.
Robert’s Role with WE
For close to 20 years, Robert has been the driving force behind WE International’s efforts in Uganda. His dogged efforts are paying off with the opening of WE International’s new Healthcare Centre a few weeks ago and the construction of a new WE Restore Home slated for completion in December. And now, Robert has a new role as pastor of WE Connect Church, the church that rose organically with the villagers of Kalungami who wanted to worship on the campus WE International is developing in that community.
During our most recent trip to Uganda, I was surprised to learn that Robert’s staff was collecting donations to purchase a set of drums as a gift in appreciation of Robert’s leadership. Despite 12 years of friendship, I had no inkling of Robert’s passion and talent for the drums. After we left, the staff bought a pair of drums that resemble Ngomo drums, a traditional African percussion instrument.
