Eva Nambi

A few weeks ago Eva Nambi (pictured below) came to the WE International construction site in Kalungami, near Musima, Uganda. Most of the crew was working on the WE Restore Dormintory that day. The single mother of three children wanted a job.

The WE International Uganda Team was skeptical. Here is what our team wrote:

Eva came to us for work, and we turned her down, saying this is a man’s job. But she didn’t back down. She explained she was a single mother, strong, determined, and ready to work for her children’s future.

She said, “I may not be a man, but I have hands, I have strength, and I need this job.”

And just like that, she picked up her tools and got to work. After being given a chance to prove herself, she quickly stood out–not only matching but exceeding the productivity and efficiency of her male counterparts.

In many of our African communities, women are still being overlooked in spaces considered “men-only.” But today, she reminded us that hard work has no gender. Strength, skill, and determination live in both men and women.

Only later did our Uganda Team learn of Eva’s painful past. She developed a hearing impairment as a result of domestic violence and abuse from her husband, who eventually abandoned the family. Despite these challenges, Eva continues to demonstrate strength, dedication, and hope.

Eva joined the WE Connect Church that meets on the job site. She fellowships faithfully with the WE International Ugandan team, along with her three beautiful children.
